Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who love a warm, funny voice, life on a mountain farm through the seasons, and stories where a family's joys and troubles gradually become the reader's own.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Earth's Blessing is a novel in letters by the Austrian writer Peter Rosegger, set in the year 1897. It is written by Hans Trautendorffer, a business editor at a city newspaper, to his old friend Alfred, a professor. Each Sunday for a year, Hans writes home from the mountain farm where he works.

How does a city man end up as a farmhand? A drunken argument in a wine tavern leads to a bet with his publisher. If Hans lives and works as an ordinary farmhand from the first of January to the last of December, he wins twenty thousand crowns. If he leaves early, he loses badly. He sets out in snow, with a bundle on a stick, and nobody wants him.

The book gives you the seasons of a mountain farm, from threshing and plowing to haymaking and the harvest. It also gives you a family with a great deal at stake, and a narrator whose jokes slowly turn into something deeper. Let us begin with the first weeks, when a clumsy writer goes door to door asking for work.

A wager sends a journalist uphill

The book opens in January 1897. Hans Trautendorffer, business editor of the Continental Post, writes mocking letters to his colleagues from the village of Zusen. He is looking for a post as a farmhand, and he is failing. One farmer laughs at his clean hands and his neat mustache. The same farmer says he needed an ox driver, and Hans asks for the place, but he is turned down.

His letters reveal the bargain behind it all. In the tavern called the Red Jug, after some glasses of new wine, Hans had said that farmhands are more genuine people than bankers or newspapermen. His publisher, Doctor Stein von Stein, took him up on it. If Hans spends the year 1897 as a plain farmhand, he will receive twenty thousand crowns on the first of January 1898. If he leaves a single day early, he must work two years at the paper without pay.

Hans gave his word of honor in front of three witnesses. Now the cold is real. He tells tall tales about his soldiering days to win a bed for a night, and fails at making kindling splints. A farmer sends him on with the kind words that he is willing but has not got the head for it.

His early letters are full of jokes, but a thread of fear runs under them. He is writing to hold on to his old self, and he already half knows that the old self is not going to survive the year.

The letters also give us a quick portrait of the man himself. He is a blacksmith's apprentice turned soldier turned journalist, a man who has tried many trades without belonging to any. That restlessness is exactly what the farm will test.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
