Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who love Romantic fiction, strong feeling and stories of forbidden love, and anyone drawn to Portuguese literature, family feuds and devoted loyalty.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Doomed Love is a short Portuguese novel by Camilo Castelo Branco, first published in 1862 as Amor de Perdição. The author wrote it in 1861 while held in a prison in Porto, awaiting trial on a charge of adultery. He drew on a family story, presenting the hero as a relative whose papers and memory he had inherited. The result is one of the best-loved books in Portuguese.

The story is set in the early years of the nineteenth century. A young man named Simão Botelho falls in love with his neighbor Teresa de Albuquerque, though their families hate each other. Around them stand angry fathers, a proud rival, a convent, a court and a poor girl whose loyalty asks for nothing. In this summary you meet a love that meets every obstacle of rank, law and family honor. Let us begin with the town where it all starts, and the two houses that cannot stand each other.

Two hostile houses stand in Viseu

The story opens in the northern Portuguese town of Viseu. There live two families of the local gentry who have long been enemies. One is the family of Domingos Botelho, a magistrate known for his firm hold on the law. The other is the family of Tadeu de Albuquerque, a proud man who guards his name and his daughter with equal care.

Simão Botelho is the magistrate's son. He is a student with a hot temper and a strong sense of his own worth. He has already shown that he is quick to fight and slow to bend. His father loves him but has little patience with his wildness, and the two do not understand each other well.

Teresa de Albuquerque lives next door. She is young, gentle and sheltered, and she belongs to a household where daughters are expected to obey. Her father has plans for her that have nothing to do with her wishes. In this world, marriage is a matter of property and rank, and a girl's feelings count for little.

Camilo sets this scene with a dry humor and a sharp eye for small provincial pride. He shows how an old quarrel between neighbors can harden into a wall. He also shows how that wall will press on two young people who have no part in the hatred. You feel the trap closing before either of them does.
