Zusammenfassung von Don Quijote de La Mancha (apokryph)
Für wen es gedacht ist
For readers who love Cervantes and want to see how a rival imitated him, and anyone curious about literary quarrels.
Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Don Quixote de la Mancha by Alonso Fernández de Avellaneda appeared in 1614 in Tarragona, nine years after Cervantes published the first part of his tale of the mad knight. Avellaneda is a pen name, and nobody has proved who wrote under it. The book calls itself the second part of the knight's adventures.
It is a rival sequel, printed before Cervantes had finished his own second part. It sends the old gentleman and his squire Sancho Panza back onto the roads of Spain, now with a different spirit and a different aim. You will see what this stranger made of the characters, and why his book pushed Cervantes to answer. Let us begin with how this book came to exist.

A sequel born from a quarrel
The first part of Cervantes's Don Quixote came out in 1605 and sold widely. Readers wanted more, and the ending of that book left room for another set of adventures. In 1614 a writer calling himself Avellaneda stepped into that gap and printed his own second part before Cervantes could finish his.
The prologue is the most talked about page of the book. In it the author attacks Cervantes directly. He mocks him as old and as a man with a damaged hand, and he complains about the first part. Readers then and since have found these jibes harsh and personal.
Who was he? Scholars have proposed many names, and none is settled. Some think he was a friend of Lope de Vega or a man from the region of Aragon. What is clear is that he knew the first part well and wrote in direct reply to it.

Questions about Don Quijote de La Mancha (apokryph)
Who really wrote Avellaneda's Don Quixote?
No one knows. Alonso Fernández de Avellaneda is a pen name, and scholars have suggested many possible authors without agreement. He was likely a Spanish writer of the early 1600s who knew Cervantes's first part closely.
What is Avellaneda's Don Quixote about?
It is an unauthorized second part of Don Quixote. The old gentleman who thinks he is a knight sets out again with Sancho Panza and meets travelers and innkeepers on the roads of Spain.
Why did Cervantes respond to Avellaneda?
Avellaneda published his sequel in 1614, before Cervantes finished his own. Its prologue also insulted Cervantes. His second part, published in 1615, answers the rival book and has the knight reject it.
When was Avellaneda's Don Quixote written?
It was printed in Tarragona in 1614, nine years after the first part of Cervantes's novel. It is fiction, a rival sequel, not a true story.
Is Avellaneda's Don Quixote worth reading?
It is worth reading if you know Cervantes. You see how another writer imitated the pair, and why critics find this Sancho and this knight different in tone and depth.
