Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who love reflective prose, meditations on illness and loss, and frank arguments with God, or who want to meet the mind behind Donne's poems.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions is a book written from a sickbed. In late 1623 John Donne, the Dean of St Paul's Cathedral in London, fell gravely ill. He was about fifty, famous as a preacher, and known earlier as a poet of love and wit. While he lay weak, he wrote down what he saw and felt, stage by stage, and the book was printed in 1624. It gives you a mind watching its own body fail and trying to make sense of it before God.

The book comes with Death's Duel, the last sermon Donne preached, in 1631, shortly before he died. In the next fifteen minutes or so you will hear how the Devotions are built, what Donne sees from his bed, where the famous bell passage comes from, and how the sermon closes his life. We begin with the sickness itself and the odd, honest way Donne chose to describe it.

A sickness becomes a subject for prayer

In the winter of 1623 Donne is struck down by a sudden and serious illness. Scholars usually think it was a form of relapsing fever, though he never names it. He is kept in bed, watched over, and cut off from his pulpit. Out of those weeks comes a book that follows the illness as it happens.

The title explains the plan. Emergent means arising suddenly, and an occasion is a moment that calls for a response. Each new turn of the disease, from the first symptoms to the long weakness of recovery, becomes an occasion for thought. Donne does not wait until he is well to write about it. He writes as one who is still inside the danger.

This matters because Donne had spent years speaking to others about death. Ordained in 1615, he had become one of the best known preachers in England. Now he has no audience, only his own body, and he has to apply his teaching to himself. The result is less polished than a sermon and more exposed.

His central claim is that illness is not an interruption of the spiritual life but a part of it. A healthy man can forget that he is dust. A sick man cannot. So Donne treats every pain, every visit, every sleepless hour as a message he is bound to read.

Questions about Andachten bei besonderen Anlässen; zusammen mit Das Duell des Todes

What is Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions about?

It is John Donne's account of a serious illness in 1623, told in twenty-three devotions. Each moves from the stage of his sickness to a thought about God, mortality and human frailty, and ends in prayer.

What does no man is an island mean in Donne's book?

It comes from Meditation 17 and means that every person is part of a larger human community. One person's death or suffering touches everyone, because all lives are joined together.

What are the three parts of each devotion?

Each devotion has a meditation, an expostulation and a prayer. The meditation reflects on a stage of the illness, the expostulation argues frankly with God, and the prayer turns the thought into a request.

What is Death's Duel?

It is the last sermon Donne preached, at court on 25 February 1631, weeks before his death. It reflects on the many ways death meets human life and on the hope Christians find in Christ.

Is Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions hard to read?

The short, repeating structure helps, and reading one devotion at a time makes it manageable.
