The party turns east up the Columbia
After gazing at the Pacific from a rise near the Columbia, Deerfoot and his friends begin the long way home. Deerfoot speaks of a time when white settlers will fill the land, and he hopes the two peoples will live side by side in peace. Then the work begins, because paddling upstream means swift water and exhausting portages.
Deerfoot holds to strict principles. One freezing night, the boys long to burn lumber from a pile that belongs to someone else. Deerfoot asks them what two and two make, and he says that taking the wood now would be a sin because they know it has an owner. So they shiver and sleep, and by morning snow covers them like blankets.
Victor sees his chance to settle old scores and pelts his three sleeping friends with snowballs. The fight ends badly for him, since Deerfoot throws faster and harder than the others put together. The scene sets the tone of the book: honest play, firm right and wrong, and a hero who is gentler than he is strong.
