Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Death Comes for the Archbishop is a novel by Willa Cather, published in 1927. It follows a French priest named Jean Marie Latour, who is sent in 1851 to be the first bishop of the vast, newly American territory of New Mexico. Cather based him on a real churchman, Jean-Baptiste Lamy, and she built the book from his life and from the memories of the Southwest that she had gathered on her own travels there.
This is not a novel with one tight plot. It moves in episodes, a little like the lives of the saints that Latour himself would have known. A priest rides across deserts and mesas, meets rogues, rancheros, Pueblo guides and rebellious old priests, and slowly builds a church in a land that does not know him. Cather wrote it with a calm, clear style, and the country itself becomes almost a character.
In about fifteen minutes you will get the shape of the whole book. You will meet the bishop and his lively friend, follow their rides and their quarrels, and see what the novel says about faith, friendship, beauty and change. Let us begin where the book begins, with a lost traveller in a landscape of red stone and strange trees.

A bishop is sent to a country without roads
The novel opens in Rome in the late 1840s. Four churchmen are talking in a villa garden with a view of the city. One of them is a missionary bishop from America, who has come to ask for a new leader for the huge territory of New Mexico, which has just passed from Mexico to the United States.
The cardinals want a man of tact and courage, and they settle on a French priest who has been working in Ohio. His name is Jean Marie Latour. He is a refined, slender man from the south of France, with a quiet mind and a taste for order. Nothing in his life has prepared him for a diocese the size of a kingdom, with no roads and few churches.
Latour sets out for Santa Fe and soon learns how hard the way is. He travels a long road through the American interior and the Southwest, and the journey is slow and lonely. At one point he is lost in the desert, thirsty and without a guide. He sees the hills covered in red cones of sand and the country seems to him like the first morning of creation, with no sign of a human hand.
Then he comes on a strange sight. A single juniper tree grows in the shape of a cross, with a trunk and two branches stretching out to the sides. Latour kneels and prays in the sand. Cather uses the moment to show what kind of man he is, someone for whom faith and beauty are joined, who sees the landscape as a place where God can be met.
The scene sets the pattern of the book. Latour is a European with a European mind, and he will have to meet a world that is old, hard and not his own. From the first pages Cather makes you feel both his loneliness and his strength. He arrives with almost nothing, and what he will build must be made from patience.
