Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Chapters from My Autobiography is a run of pieces that Mark Twain, born Samuel Clemens, published in the North American Review in 1906 and 1907. They were taken from the much larger autobiography he was dictating in his last years. Twain had tried to write his life story for decades and kept failing. Near the end he found a way that worked, and these chapters are the first part of it that the public saw while he was still alive.
What do you get? You get an old man talking about his childhood, his family, his money, his griefs and his opinions, in the voice of a born storyteller. He jokes, he wanders off, he settles scores, and now and then he stops joking and tells you something painful. In the next section we look at the method that shaped everything else, because Twain believed the way he told his life mattered as much as the life itself.

Twain finds a new way to tell his life
Twain had started and abandoned autobiographies many times over the years. Each attempt died the same way. When he sat down to write, his life turned into a stiff and formal record, and he lost interest. He wanted the ease of ordinary talk, the way a man tells a story to friends across a table.
His answer, in his last years, was to dictate. He spoke his memories aloud to a stenographer, and the words were taken down as they came. He worked this way from about 1906, after earlier trials in Italy, where he and his family had lived for a time. Talking let him be what he was best at, a performer with an audience.
He believed he had made a real discovery. In his view, an autobiography should be a form of talk that wanders, and he said so in his own way. He thought a life story should follow the mind, not the calendar. A memory that comes back unasked, he felt, is a memory worth keeping.
This changes how you read the book. You are not walking down a straight road from birth to old age. You are sitting near a man who is thinking aloud, and who trusts you to follow him when he turns a corner. Once you accept that, the loose shape stops being a flaw and becomes the charm of the thing.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.

When did Mark Twain write his autobiography?

No. The language is plain and conversational because it was spoken.
Why did Twain want his autobiography published after his death?
He felt that he could speak most freely if he would not be alive to answer for it. He planned for much of the fuller text to be held back for many years.
