Worum es in diesem Buch geht
What if you could learn a whole religion by answering one question at a time? Baltimore Catechism No. 3 does exactly that. It holds fourteen hundred numbered questions and answers, each short enough to memorize and clear enough to understand.
It rests on the catechism prepared by the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore, a gathering of American Catholic bishops in the 1880s. The priest Thomas Kinkead shaped it into a classbook for young people. You get clear definitions, reasons for each teaching, and practical advice for daily life.

Punkt 1 von 10
Learn the great prayers first
The book starts with prayers, not arguments. The Our Father, the Hail Mary, the Apostles’ Creed and the Confiteor come first, followed by acts of faith, hope, love and contrition. A student should have the words in the heart before studying the reasons behind them.
The questions then take each prayer apart. The Our Father has seven petitions. Three concern God's honor and four concern our needs. We say our and not my because all people belong to one human family.
Temptation gets careful treatment. It is not a sin to be tempted, only to give in or to seek it out needlessly. The best defense is to resist at the very beginning, turn the mind away, and pray.
Prayers are the doorway into the faith, and the book wants you to know them before you debate them.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.

About 5 h 10 min to read.Questions about Baltimore-Katechismus Nr. 3
What is Baltimore Catechism No. 3 about?
It is a question-and-answer course in Catholic doctrine. It covers the great prayers, God and the Trinity, sin, Christ, the Church, the seven sacraments, prayer, the Ten Commandments and the last things, in fourteen hundred short answers.
What is the difference between Baltimore Catechism No. 3 and the other numbers?
No. 3 expands the second catechism while abridging a longer Explanation. It expands on the simpler second catechism with extra questions and answers, marked in different type, so students can see the reasons and details behind each teaching.
Who wrote the Baltimore Catechism?
Its basis was prepared by the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore, a gathering of American bishops in the 1880s. Thomas Kinkead edited this classbook version, adding questions drawn from a longer explanation of the catechism.
Is the Baltimore Catechism easy to read?
Yes, in the sense that each answer is short, numbered and written in plain language. The lessons follow a steady order, define each term, and often explain the reason for a teaching, so readers can take them one question at a time.
What is the main message of the Baltimore Catechism?
The main message is that God made people to know, love and serve Him, and that Christ, the Church and the sacraments help them reach heaven. The commandments and prayer show how to live that purpose each day.
