Für wen es gedacht ist
For readers who love gentle, closely observed stories about conscience and affection, and for anyone curious about Trollope's final work.
Worum es in diesem Buch geht
An Old Man's Love is the last novel Anthony Trollope wrote. He finished it shortly before his death in 1882, and it came out after he died, in 1884. It is a short book for him, and a quiet one. Instead of the wide cast of his Barchester and Palliser novels, it keeps close to a small circle in the English countryside.
At its center stands William Whittlestaff, a well-off, scholarly bachelor who has settled into a calm routine. Into that routine comes a young woman, and with her a question of love, gratitude and fairness that has no easy answer. In this summary you get the shape of the situation, the people caught in it, and the questions the book asks. Let us begin with the man at the center.

Punkt 1 von 4
A settled bachelor meets a late hope
William Whittlestaff is a man past his youth who has arranged his life to suit himself. He is comfortably off, fond of books, and used to being the master of his own house. He has known disappointment in love, and he has learned to live without expecting much more from it.
His household is kept in order by his housekeeper, Mrs. Baggett. She is devoted to him, plain-spoken, and ready to give her opinion on his affairs whether he asks for it or not. Their small exchanges give the book much of its warmth and humor.
Then a young woman, Mary Lawrie, comes into his life. She is the daughter of a friend, and she has little money and few places to turn. Whittlestaff feels a tender wish to help her. As he spends time with her, that wish begins to look like something deeper, and he does not quite know what to do with it. Trollope lets us watch an older man discover that his heart is not as quiet as he thought.
That’s 1 of 4 key points.
