For readers who love Little Women and Alcott's warm, moral family storytelling, or enjoy gentle novels about friendship, growing up and staying true to personal values.
Worum es in diesem Buch geht
An Old-Fashioned Girl is a novel by Louisa May Alcott, the American writer behind Little Women. It first appeared in a magazine in 1869 and came out as a book in 1870. Alcott later added chapters that carry the story forward by several years. It follows Polly Milton, a girl from a plain country home, and what happens when she meets city life and its fashions.
Alcott wrote it as a kind of reply to her times. She felt that girls were being hurried into grown-up clothes, parties and flirting, and that families were turning away from simple affection. She does not scold from a distance. She puts a cheerful, hard-working girl into a rich household and lets you watch what each side teaches the other.
You get a warm and often funny family story, with a quarrelsome brother, a sharp old grandmother, a spoiled little sister and a friend who cares too much about looking right. You also get a look at how young women earned their living in the 1870s. Let us begin with Polly's first visit, when a country girl steps into a house where everything is done for show.

A country girl arrives in the city
The story opens with fourteen-year-old Polly Milton leaving her quiet country home for a visit to her friend Fanny Shaw in the city. Polly comes from a large, loving family with little money. Her father is a country minister, and the household is busy, cheerful and plain. She travels with simple clothes and a simple heart, and she expects to be welcomed as a friend.
The Shaw house is nothing like home. It is large, handsome and full of servants, and everyone in it seems to be in a hurry to be somewhere else. Fanny is a pretty girl who thinks a great deal about her dresses, her hair and what her friends will say. She greets Polly kindly, but she is a little worried by the old coat and the plain hat her friend has brought.
Alcott spends her first scenes on small embarrassments. At the table, Polly notices that the family hardly talks to one another and that the children are allowed to be rude. Mr. Shaw is a busy man who is rarely home. Mrs. Shaw is often tired and nervous, and she leaves much of the house to the maids.
Polly does not complain, and she does not put on airs. She tries to be useful, as she was at home, and she does small kindnesses without making a show of them. This is the book's first quiet joke, because the household does not know what to make of a guest who wants to help rather than be waited on.
The opening matters because it sets the contrast the whole book will use. On one side stands a home where love is shown in daily work and shared pleasures. On the other stands a home where money and fashion rule. Alcott lets you feel Polly's loneliness among the fine things, but she also hints that Polly has something the Shaws need.
That’s 1 of 8 key points.
