Für wen es gedacht ist

You will enjoy this if you love spirited heroines, bush settings, family comedy and children who invent whole worlds, and if you like a warm story with a gentle eye for human weakness.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

An Australian Lassie is a story of family life near Sydney, written by Lilian Turner. It follows the Bruce children in a weatherboard cottage on the North Shore, in the days of bush tracks, steamers and slate pencils. At its center is Betty, a twelve-year-old with a huge imagination, a quick temper and a firm belief that no Bruce is ever afraid.

The book gives you school quarrels, a family feud that has lasted since before Betty was born, and a girl who keeps trying to fix the world with plans too big for her. It also gives you a clear picture of how children played, worked and dreamed. Listen for the humor, because the author often speaks to the reader with a smile. We begin at Wygate School, where Betty has just fallen to the bottom of the class.

A feud begins at Wygate School

The story opens in the schoolroom at Wygate School, where Mr. Sharman reads out the class order. Elizabeth Bruce has fallen to the very bottom, and she stands on the bench to explain how. She pulled a girl's hair, squeaked her pencil, and whispered a spelling to her twin brother Cyril. Her audience is a new boy, John Brown, a big, clumsy thirteen-year-old who stands waiting for his seat.

Betty takes an instant dislike to him. She whispers that he is a cheat, she pinches him, and she kicks his boot. Then the arithmetic begins. John answers a sum with an answer so grand that the master is startled, and by lunchtime he sits at the head of the class. Betty is still at the bottom, writing out her punishment sentence fifty times.

After school the three young Bruces walk home along the bush track. Besides the twins there is little Nancy, who is six. They pass the iron gates of Dene Hall, where their grandfather, a stern old sea captain, lives. He has not spoken to the family for years, and Betty has taught the others to fear his gun and his emus.

They slip away to the creek in the gully, where a broken fence makes what Betty calls her dangerous coral islands. The game is a hunt for a black pearl worth thousands of pounds. This time John Brown is sitting there with a fishing line and claims the place is his grandfather's. Betty throws stones and aims badly. Cyril melts away into the bush, and the quarrel is set for the rest of the book.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.
