Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Alias the Lone Wolf is an adventure novel by Louis Joseph Vance, one of a series about a reformed master thief. It was written in the years after the Great War, and it follows Michael Lanyard, once the Lone Wolf of Paris, who now lives under the name André Duchemin. It gives you a chase across France and the Atlantic, a pair of rival gangs, a stolen fortune in gems and a hero who must clear his own name.
The story opens in London, where a friend from the British Secret Service dismisses Duchemin from service and sends him out of England for his own safety. He walks south through the Cévennes in the footsteps of Stevenson and means only to rest. A moonlit fight among strange rock formations drags him into the lives of a widow named Eve de Montalais and her family. Soon a party of glittering strangers appears, and a talk of jewels begins.
What you get is a quick, witty story full of disguises, night chases, clever talk and a hero who prefers his wits to his fists. It moves from mountain villages to Parisian nightclubs, then to a yacht at sea. Let us begin where the walk begins, among the lonely stone cities of the high plateaus.

A spy is sent out to walk
The book begins in London, in the rooms of a man known as André Duchemin. His visitor is Wertheimer, a senior man in the British Secret Service. Wertheimer teases him about his age, accepts a resignation Duchemin offers half in jest, and then reveals the real purpose of his call. Duchemin has made enemies among the Bolsheviks, and word has come that his name is marked for death. He must leave England within a day, with passports and money, and no one will ask where he goes.
Duchemin is left to decide. Wertheimer has left a copy of Stevenson's Travels with a Donkey on the chair, and the hint is plain. The Cévennes, a thinly peopled corner of southern France, seem the safest place in Europe. He crosses the Channel by a secret route and begins his walk at Le Monastier.
He walks for more than two weeks, sleeping outdoors and growing a beard that changes his face. His body hardens and his worries fade. Yet he does not forget the dream that tugs at him, a quiet bourgeois old age as a shopkeeper and grandfather. He tells himself that his days of adventure are over.
The narrator adds a warning that God has the last word. At Meyrueis he ignores a host's advice to hire a guide and sets out across the high limestone plateau. That choice will cost him his peace.
From this opening you learn what kind of man he is. He is proud, humorous, wary and tired, and he secretly hungers for something to do. The author sets up a hero who says he wants rest and cannot help seeking trouble.
That’s 1 of 11 key points.
