Für wen es gedacht ist

You will love this if you enjoy school stories full of friendships and feuds, midnight feasts and mysteries, and tender scenes with children, and if you wonder what honesty and forgiveness really cost.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

What do you do with a girl who seems loved by everyone, when you have already decided to dislike her? Hester Thornton is twelve, dressed in black for her mother, and sure that her new school is a prison. Within hours of reaching Lavender House, she refuses to shake hands with Annie Forest, the laughing favorite of the whole school.

A World of Girls was written by L. T. Meade, and it follows life at a Victorian boarding school, from Hester's winter arrival through rivalry, illness, reconciliation and a delayed prize giving. Two proud, wounded girls each feel wronged, and a very small child stands between them. You get a warm, lively tale about trust, pride and jealousy, and about how a small wrong grows when nobody owns up to it.

A Girl Leaves Home Heartbroken

The story opens in a country house, where a toddler named Nan slips away from her nurse to find her big sister Hester. Hester, about twelve and in deep mourning, takes her into a small study and feeds her biscuits and then sugar lumps. She knows this is their last hour together, and she wants Nan to never forget her.

Hester's mother died in a carriage accident only three months before. Her father, Sir John Thornton, is just and upright but knows nothing about children. When Hester climbs trees, tears her dresses and rides his horses bareback, he decides the cure is a boarding school. He reads his paper all the way to the station and tells her he dislikes displays of emotion in public.

Hester sees school as a prison. On the train she cries behind her crape veil and decides she will not learn and will not improve. If school fails to change her, she tells herself, her father will let her stay at home. She will not let the servants say her mother's name, and she talks of her only to Nan.

The train brings one small kindness. Two elderly sisters, the Misses Bruce, offer sandwiches and queen cakes, coax out her troubles and tell her that school can be like living in clover. They promise to look for her in church on Sunday.

Grief can make a person proud, but love is the thing that breaks the pride.
