A Paris artist meets a prince
The story opens on a May morning in Paris. Joan Vernon, a lively American art student, crosses the city to the Louvre to copy Caravaggio's The Fortune Teller. On the Pont Neuf she meets Alec Delgrado, a polo player she has been seeing for three weeks.
Alec carries her easel and finally admits the truth. Joan is shaken. She decides that a hard-working artist must not fall in love with a prince.
She answers with a speech about the goddess Pallas Athene, who drives her chosen heroes, the sons of the Immortals, through danger and battle. Alec takes her words to heart and says he means to make something of himself. Across the gallery, a smartly dressed man watches them and smiles as if he knows a secret.
