Worum es in diesem Buch geht
A Son at the Front is a novel by Edith Wharton, published in 1923. Wharton, an American who had made her home in France, lived through the First World War in Paris. She worked for refugees and visited the war zone. The book grows out of those years, and it looks at the war from the home front, among the people who wait.
The hero is John Campton, an American painter in Paris, and his son George. The father is proud and moody, and he is devoted to his boy. As Europe goes to war in 1914, Campton has to ask what he owes his country, his art and his son. You will meet a divorced family pulled together by fear, a city that changes month by month, and a man who learns slowly. The first key point is where the story begins, with a father who thinks he can protect his son.

A painter and his son in Paris
The story opens in Paris in the summer of 1914. John Campton is an American painter who has worked in France for many years. He has a name as a portraitist, though he feels his best work is still ahead of him. He is touchy, self-absorbed and easily stung, yet nothing in his life matters to him as much as his son.
That son is George, a young man who is easygoing and well liked. Campton is divorced, and George has grown up between two worlds. One is his father's untidy studio life. The other is the comfortable household of his mother. Campton has never quite made peace with that split, and he treasures every hour he gets with the boy.
Wharton draws Campton with a sharp eye. He is not a simple hero. He can be vain, jealous and unfair, and he knows it, which does not stop him. Yet his love for George is the one pure thing in him, and the novel rests on it.
The early pages also set the scene. Paris is a city of cafes, studios, salons and rich foreign residents who have no idea what is about to happen. When the news turns grave, the comfortable calm gives way, and Campton must face a question he never expected.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
