Für wen es gedacht ist
For readers who love short fiction with a sharp edge, history woven into plot, and stories that leave a question open. These tales explore war, conspiracy, honour and the ways people act under pressure.
Worum es in diesem Buch geht
A Set of Six is a collection of six tales by Joseph Conrad, published in 1908. Conrad wrote most of them in the years after his great sea novels, when he was also at work on political fiction. The stories range widely. You travel from the Andes in the wars of Chilean independence to the anarchist circles of London, from a haunted merchant ship to the officers of Napoleon's cavalry, and from a South American estate to the streets of Naples.
The six are Gaspar Ruiz, The Informer, The Brute, An Anarchist, The Duel and Il Conde. Several are told by one person to another, so you hear each story through a speaker with his own habits and blind spots. What ties the set together is a steady interest in how people act under pressure, and how rarely fate or justice rewards them as they deserve. We begin with a giant soldier whose great strength is used by others.

A strong man is used by every side
Gaspar Ruiz opens the collection in South America during the wars against Spanish rule. The story is told in later years by a Chilean general, who remembers events from his youth. Gaspar is a simple, enormously strong peasant who joins the patriot army. He is brave but has no politics and no cunning, and he is not a man who asks why he fights.
He is captured by the royalists, and here the tale shows its cruelty. His captors do not simply imprison him. They see his strength as a tool they can use. The story fixes on this idea. A man's gift is turned into a burden by people who want a use for it.
Later Gaspar returns to a life that should be gentler. He marries a woman named Erminia, and for a time it seems he may find a private happiness away from armies and flags. But the new order he served does not reward him as he expects. Suspicion and bad faith follow him, and his loyalty is tested by men who care little for it.
The tale asks what a nation owes the simple soldier who carries its cause. Conrad does not answer with a speech. He lets you watch Gaspar, a man of few words, slowly understand that both sides have treated him as a weapon, and that a weapon can be turned.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
