Punkt 1 von 9

A sleepless musician meets a calming painter

The story is told by a young musician, half Italian, who falls ill from overwork one winter in the 1880s. Her doctor in London, Dr. R, has one treatment for every patient, and it fails her. He sends her to Cannes with her American friends, Colonel Everard and his lively wife Amy.

At the Hotel de L, she meets Raffaello Cellini, a young Italian painter whose colors amaze Paris and Rome. When he passes her in the garden with a single kind look, her nervous agitation melts away. His studio becomes a place of rest for her, and she often gazes at his large canvas, Lords of Our Life and Death, which shows a sorrowing Angel of Death above a globe and a glowing face of Life beyond.

Cellini asks to paint her portrait, and she agrees almost against her own will. Amy finds him odd, even eerie. The narrator finds only calm, and the reader begins to sense that something more than kindness is at work.
