Punkt 1 von 9

Two partners wait in a filthy hut

The story opens in Africa. Scarlett Trent, a rough young trader, and an old ruined gentleman called Monty sit in a native village in Bekwando. They have come to win a concession to work gold mines from the local King.

Trent has spent his savings on bearers and rum. Monty, a drunkard with the voice of an Eton man, dreams of wealth as a golden key to London and Paris. He wants only a year or two of real living, and his talk plants a secret dread in Trent, who wonders if money can buy happiness at all.

The scene sets up both men. Trent is hard, practical and proud. Monty is weak, sharp and broken. Their bargain will tie them together long after the hut is gone.
