Worum es in diesem Buch geht
A Legend of Montrose is a historical novel by Walter Scott, published in 1819 as part of his series Tales of My Landlord. It looks back to the Scottish Civil War of the 1640s. The Marquis of Montrose raised the Highlands for King Charles the First against the Covenanters, who held power in Edinburgh and had Archibald Campbell, Marquis of Argyle, as a leading figure. Scott wrote it after a run of successes that had made Scottish history his main subject.
You get a war story and a comedy together. At its centre is Dugald Dalgetty, a Scottish soldier of fortune who has fought for pay in the wars of Europe and now returns home looking for a master who will feed him and his horse. Around him stand Highland chiefs, feuding clans, a young nobleman torn between loyalties, and a seer whose visions frighten his neighbours. In this summary you will meet the main people, explore the story's themes, and see how Scott builds it. The first thing to grasp is the Scotland the novel is set in.

A Scotland split by war and clan
The novel is set in the mid 1640s, when the quarrels between King Charles and his Parliament had spread to Scotland. The Covenanters had signed a national pledge to defend their form of church, and they now ruled much of the Lowlands. Many Highland chiefs, and many nobles who distrusted that rule, stood for the king instead.
Scott shows that this was never a simple fight of two sides. Old clan feuds ran underneath the politics. A chief might join the royal cause because his ancient enemy joined the other, and not because he cared about the king at all. The Campbells, led by the Marquis of Argyle, were enemies of many neighbouring clans, and that hatred matters as much to the story as any loyalty to a crown.
The country itself is a character. Scott describes glens, lochs, castles and mountain passes in loving detail, and the reader feels how hard it is to move an army through them. The hidden paths make a guide who knows the country a valuable companion.
Into this crowded and dangerous land comes the story's central figure. Scott was fascinated by the clash between a tidy modern world of law and trade and an older world of kinship and the sword. This book sets that clash on a Highland stage, and it asks you to feel sympathy for people on both sides of it.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
