A Pixie Girl Arrives in Disguise
Diana Hewlitt reaches Pendlemere Abbey on the first day of term. That is also the day the girls learn that their headmistress, Mrs. Gifford, has sailed for Burma to join her husband. Miss Todd, the second mistress, now runs the school, and the girls grumble about it from a wheelbarrow in the garden.
Then a stranger shambles toward them. She stoops, stares blankly, has a receding chin and a creaky voice, and says her name is Miranda Jane Judkins of Massachusetts. When the girls are properly horrified, she straightens up and her face turns bright and amused. She is Diana, a born actress, and her parents have left her at the nearest good school because they cannot take her to Paris.
Wendy Cranston, a cheerful girl in the intermediate form, later offers Diana her friendship. They agree to plan pranks together. The scene sets the tone for the whole book, because Diana will fool people, charm them and get into trouble, and the school will never be quite the same.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about Ein übermütiges Schulmädchen
What is A Harum-Scarum Schoolgirl about?
It follows Diana Hewlitt, a spirited American girl, through a year at Pendlemere Abbey, an English boarding school. She makes friends, plays pranks, gets into scrapes and helps others, while a quiet mystery about the old house runs in the background.
Who is Loveday Seton?
Loveday is a shy senior and Diana's roommate. Her family once owned the Abbey, but it was sold before she was born. She is an orphan, lives with an aunt and uncle, and hopes to train for a career.
When is A Harum-Scarum Schoolgirl set?
It is set around the end of the First World War. The school year begins in September, the armistice comes in November, and the story runs through the following summer, with wartime shortages and soldiers on leave in the background.
Is A Harum-Scarum Schoolgirl easy to read?
Yes, it is approachable. The chapters are short and each tells one adventure, the dialogue is lively, and the mix of pranks, friendships and a hidden mystery keeps the story moving from one scene to the next.
What does harum-scarum mean in the title?
Harum-scarum describes someone who acts boldly and carelessly without thinking. It suits Diana, who dives into a lake, crawls along a church gallery and climbs down ivy at dawn, though the church gallery makes her pause in fear.
