Für wen es gedacht ist

Readers who enjoy a sharp parody of detective fiction, a tale of revenge that grows odder by the chapter, and a rough mining camp full of talkative, quick-witted men.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

What if a bloodhound's nose could serve a mother's revenge, and a famous detective could be fooled by a few rags and splinters? Then it turns into a comic mining camp mystery that pokes fun at Sherlock Holmes. You follow Archy Stillman, a young man with a tracker's nose and a mother with a plan. You meet a quiet boy who plots a murder with endless care. And you watch a great detective dazzle a crowd. Both barrels are aimed.

Punkt 1 von 6

A cruel marriage sets the story going

The book opens in Virginia in 1880 with a wedding that looks like a love story. The bridegroom, Jacob Fuller, is twenty-six. The bride is nineteen, proud, and beautiful. Her father warned her against the man, yet she defied him.

The morning after, the husband turns on her. He wants revenge on her father, so he shames the daughter the old man adores. For three months he invents humiliations, and she keeps them secret. Then one midnight he ties her to a tree by the public road, strikes her, and sets his hounds on her. He leaves her to be found, and he flees.

The father's pride and heart break, and she sells the estate and vanishes. Twain tells all this in quick, plain sentences, and the horror lies in the facts.
